Cybercrime cases reported in Vijayawada on a single day have highlighted the growing use of APK files, UPI transactions and fake reward links to target bank customers. 4 complaints were registered under the Patamata police station limits, with police beginning investigations to trace the transactions and identify the fraudsters.
In the first case, Nagaraju of Ramavarappadu allegedly received an APK file presented as a KYC update. After opening it, fraudsters reportedly gained access to his banking details and withdrew money from his account.
A similar incident was reported by Paklapati Ravivarma of Nidamanuru. He allegedly opened an APK file sent by cybercriminals, exposing his device and banking information. Police said money was subsequently withdrawn from his account.
In another case, Manoj Kumar of Prasadampadu allegedly became a victim of a UPI fraud. Cybercriminals reportedly gained access to his account and carried out multiple unauthorised transactions.
The 4th victim, Rajendra, a retired bank manager from Nagarjuna Nagar, was allegedly targeted through a fake SBI reward points link. After clicking the link, fraudsters reportedly accessed his banking details and withdrew money.
Patamata police have registered the complaints through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and are examining transaction trails to identify the bank accounts and digital channels involved. The Vijayawada City Cyber Crime Wing is assisting with the investigation.
