Sharing Instagram Reels in conversations could soon become more convenient for WhatsApp users, with a new shortcut being tested in the app’s Android beta version. The feature adds a dedicated Reels button to the chat attachment menu, allowing users to find and share videos without navigating through the media picker.
WhatsApp Reels shortcut: How it works
The feature is reportedly rolling out to selected users running WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.42.9, available through the Google Play Store.
Tapping the new Reels button takes users to their Instagram activity, where they can browse recently watched, saved and liked videos. Users can select a Reel from any of these sections and share it directly in a WhatsApp chat.
To access the shortcut, users must link their WhatsApp account to Meta’s Accounts Centre. Those who prefer to keep WhatsApp separate from Instagram and Facebook can continue using the apps independently, but the dedicated Reels button will not appear in their chat attachment menu.
How the feature differs from the existing option
WhatsApp already supports sharing Instagram and Facebook stories, posts and Reels through its media picker. However, users must open the picker and navigate to the relevant section to locate the content they want to share.
The new shortcut offers a more direct option by giving Reels a dedicated button in the attachment menu. It allows users to browse their Instagram activity and share videos without taking the additional steps required by the existing method.
Availability
The feature has been spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.42.9 and is currently reaching selected beta testers. However, installing the latest beta version does not guarantee access, as the rollout is limited.
WhatsApp has not yet announced when the feature will become available to all users.
