WhatsApp is reportedly introducing a new feature for iPhone users that makes it easier to switch between Apple’s microphone processing modes during calls. The update is expected to let users access microphone settings directly from the in-call interface without opening the iPhone’s Control Center, making call management more convenient.
According to a report, the feature has been spotted in WhatsApp for iOS version 26.27.74 and is being rolled out gradually. Eligible users will be able to open Apple’s built-in microphone menu during an active call and choose from Standard, Voice Isolation, Wide Spectrum, and Automatic modes. Any selected option is expected to take effect immediately without interrupting the ongoing call.
The report states that WhatsApp is not introducing its own audio processing system on iOS. Instead, it is providing quicker access to Apple’s existing microphone controls. Apple first introduced Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum with iOS 15 for FaceTime and supported third-party apps, later expanding Voice Isolation to regular phone calls in iOS 16.4 and adding Automatic mode in iOS 18.
Each microphone mode is designed for different situations. Voice Isolation helps reduce background noise and prioritises speech, while Wide Spectrum captures more surrounding sounds. Standard uses Apple’s default audio processing, and Automatic allows iOS to choose the most suitable mode during a call.
The report also suggests that once a microphone mode is selected, iOS will continue using that preference for future WhatsApp calls until the user changes it.
This approach differs from WhatsApp’s recent Android update, where the platform reportedly introduced its own built-in noise cancellation feature for voice and video calls. On iPhones, WhatsApp is instead relying on Apple’s existing microphone processing technology while making it easier to access during calls.
