India’s first privately developed orbital rocket, Vikram-1, created history on Saturday by successfully entering Earth’s orbit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Skyroot Aerospace team on the achievement, calling it a defining moment in India’s space journey.

Prime Minister Modi said on the social media platform X that he spoke with the Skyroot Aerospace team and congratulated them on the successful launch of Vikram-1. He said this marks an important milestone in India’s space journey. The Prime Minister said that the growing participation of the private sector is opening doors to new opportunities, accelerating innovation, and that this achievement will inspire countless young people in the country to dream big and innovate fearlessly.
India became the third country in the world
Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 rocket successfully reached orbit as part of ‘Mission Aagaman’, making India the third country in the world after the US and China where a private company has successfully demonstrated orbital launch capability.
Successful launch from Sriharikota
The 24-metre tall carbon-composite rocket, launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, successfully completed all its scheduled flight phases and placed its payload into a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) of about 450 km.
Jaishankar and Jitendra Singh also appreciated
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar described the mission as “truly historic,” saying it was a result of the innovation capabilities of India’s youth and the reforms undertaken in the space sector. Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh called it a milestone for India’s commercial space ecosystem.
Successful completion of all stages
During the mission, the Kalam-1200, the solid-fuel first stage motor, delivered the rocket beyond the densest part of the atmosphere. The Kalam-250 and Kalam-100 stages then performed as intended. Finally, the Orbital Adjustment Module (OAM), using its 3D-printed liquid engine, successfully placed the rocket into its final orbit.
Vikram-1 also carried the diamond and the message of ‘Vande Mataram’.
Vikram-1, capable of carrying a payload of up to 350 kg into a 450 km low Earth orbit, carried several payloads. These included the lab-grown diamond ‘Diamond Lotus’ developed by Bengaluru-based Cosmos Diamonds. A postcard with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handwritten message “Vande Mataram” was also sent along with the mission. Handwritten messages from the Skyroot team, investors, policymakers, and well-wishers from around the world were also part of the mission.
