Survey shows most users reject YouTube Premium as prices increase further

A recent survey highlights growing resistance among users to pay for premium video streaming, even as subscription costs continue to rise.

While YouTube Premium offers an ad-free experience, background play, and bundled access to YouTube Music Premium, many users still question whether the benefits justify the cost.

According to a survey of 2,913 respondents conducted in March 2026, around 65.40% said they refuse to pay for YouTube. Only 28.87% reported subscribing to YouTube Premium, while 3.12% opted for the Lite version. Another 2.61% said they are not yet subscribed but plan to in the future.

The findings suggest that despite increasing ad frequency and longer ad durations on the free version, most users continue to rely on non-paid alternatives. Many turn to third-party tools such as ad blockers or alternative apps to improve their viewing experience without paying.

However, a significant minority still sees value in the subscription. Some users consider YouTube Premium worth the cost, especially for its convenience across devices and time-saving features. Others highlight savings through annual plans, which reduce overall yearly expenses.

The debate comes at a time when YouTube has introduced a price increase in the US. The standard Premium plan has risen by 14%, from $13.99 to $15.99 per month. The family plan has increased by 17%, while the Lite and student plans have gone up by 12.5%.

Updated pricing (March 2026 onwards):

  • Individual (Monthly): $15.99
  • Individual (Annual): $159.99
  • Family (Monthly, up to 6 members): $26.99
  • Lite (Monthly): $8.99
  • Student (Monthly): $8.99

The price hike could make it even harder to convert free users into paying subscribers, especially as many already resist the idea of paying for content that remains accessible without a subscription.
