US President Donald Trump purchased up to $1.6 million and sold up to $1 million worth of Nvidia shares in August, according to his latest financial disclosure released on Thursday. The disclosure comes as Trump prepares to present Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang with the National Medal of Science, the country’s highest honour for scientific achievement.
The disclosure has drawn attention to Trump’s investments in one of the world’s most valuable companies as his administration considers policies that could affect Nvidia’s business, including regulations on exports of advanced chips.
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told a news agency that independent third-party financial institutions manage Trump’s investment portfolio and replicate “recognized indexes, such as the Schwab 1000.”
Ingle also stated, “All investment decisions are made entirely by independent managers,” adding, “There are no conflicts of interest.”
Huang is scheduled to receive the National Medal of Science from Trump on Thursday. According to the National Science Foundation, the award recognises Americans who have made “outstanding contributions to knowledge in the physical, biological, mathematical, engineering, or social and behavioral sciences, in service to the nation.”
Previous recipients have been recognised for achievements ranging from cancer detection to protecting food supplies during droughts.
The Nvidia transactions were among hundreds of trades Trump made in August. The financial disclosure, signed by the president on September 17, was made public on Thursday.
Trump is also scheduled to present the same award to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Google co-founder Sergey Brin on Thursday. Nvidia has not immediately responded to a request for comment.
