TP-Link to set up its largest global factory in India

TP-Link India is planning to build its biggest manufacturing facility in the country as part of a five-year expansion strategy, with investments expected to exceed ₹100 crore. The network equipment maker, known for Wi-Fi routers and mesh devices, is in talks with three state governments to finalise a location and secure necessary approvals. Bijoy Alaylo, chief operating officer of TP-Link India, confirmed that the company is assessing potential sites for the new factory.

The new plant will make India TP-Link’s third major production base, joining existing factories in Brazil and Vietnam. Initially, it will focus on meeting domestic demand for two years before expanding exports to West Asia, Africa, and Turkey. Currently, around 92 percent of TP-Link’s products sold in India are made locally through contract manufacturers. The company aims to increase this figure to 96 to 97 percent within three years and eventually handle all production in-house.

TP-Link expects its Indian operations to grow rapidly, potentially matching its US business within two years and emerging as the company’s largest market in three to five years. The company also plans to expand beyond consumer networking products into enterprise solutions, including AI-driven systems such as automatic number plate recognition and people-counting technologies, which are seeing steady double-digit growth.

Founded in Shenzhen, China, in 1996, TP-Link underwent a global restructuring in 2022 to separate its international and Chinese operations. The restructuring, completed in May 2024, placed TP-Link India under the US-based arm, while the original Chinese entity now serves only the domestic market in China.

However, TP-Link’s US operations are currently under review. Recent reports suggest that the US government is considering an “initial determination” that could classify TP-Link as a national security risk due to its China ties. Despite these challenges, TP-Link continues to focus on expanding its manufacturing footprint and product offerings in India.
