Tesla is moving closer to bringing its purpose-built autonomous vehicle to public roads, with the company reportedly preparing to begin Cybercab rides for employees in Austin, Texas, as soon as August.
The Cybercab has been designed without pedals or a steering wheel and is central to Tesla’s plans for an autonomous ride-hailing service. According to a report citing people familiar with the plans, Tesla has told employees that the initial rollout could begin with rides for staff on public roads.
The company then plans to add Cybercabs to its robotaxi service in Austin a few days later, according to the report.
Tesla has been taking several steps ahead of the planned launch. These include test drives, employee rides on private roads and training sessions with local first responders in recent weeks.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The company began testing the production version of the Cybercab on public roads in June. Production of the vehicle is expected to increase later this year as Tesla moves towards its wider autonomous ride-hailing plans.
The Austin rollout could mark an important step for Tesla as it works to turn the Cybercab from a development project into a commercial autonomous transport service.
