In a remarkable leadership shift, Axiom Space has elevated Tejpaul Bhatia, an Indian-origin executive, to the role of Chief Executive Officer just ahead of a monumental space mission involving ISRO and NASA.
Bhatia, who has served as Chief Revenue Officer for the past four years, steps into the role previously held by Dr. Kam Ghaffarian, Axiom’s Co-founder and Executive Chairman. Ghaffarian, while handing over the CEO responsibilities, will continue to guide the company as Executive Chairman.
This significant announcement aligns with the impending launch of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who will pilot Axiom’s Ax-4 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) in May 2025, marking India’s entry into a new age of human spaceflight.
Bhatia’s journey to the helm is a story of relentless innovation. Before Axiom, he sharpened his leadership acumen at Google, driving strategic narratives and ecosystem partnerships that supported a $4 billion sales pipeline. A serial entrepreneur, he also founded three investor-backed startups, achieving two successful acquisitions.
Since his arrival at Axiom in 2021, Bhatia has been a catalyst for pioneering collaborations, from leading the industry’s first sovereign government purchases of commercial astronaut missions, to steering partnerships like the one with Prada for next-gen lunar spacesuits, and Nokia for integrating high-speed cellular connectivity into lunar suits.
Speaking about his new journey, Bhatia shared, “I’ve been inspired by space exploration since childhood, and leading Axiom Space at this critical inflection point in human spaceflight is the realization of a lifelong ambition.” He also emphasized the company’s commitment to investing in revolutionary technologies across spacesuits, orbital infrastructure, and microgravity research.
Meanwhile, former interim CEO Kam Ghaffarian expressed full confidence in Bhatia’s leadership, stating, “His entrepreneurial drive and commitment to our mission will ensure Axiom’s leadership as the space economy accelerates.”
