SSE plc Appoints Martin Pibworth as New CEO

In a significant leadership change, SSE plc has named Martin Pibworth as its new Chief Executive Officer, following the retirement of Alistair Phillips-Davies. Pibworth, who has been with SSE since 1998, will officially take over the role after the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on July 17, 2025.

This appointment comes after a thorough selection process, carefully evaluating both internal and external candidates. The process was overseen by SSE’s Chairman, Sir John Manzoni, with assistance from executive search firm Korn Ferry. Currently serving as SSE’s Chief Commercial Officer, Pibworth has been integral to shaping the company’s strategic direction, particularly within its renewable and thermal energy sectors.

Sir John Manzoni shared his confidence in Pibworth’s abilities, stating, “Martin is a proven industry leader, with deep sector experience and a highly strategic outlook, demonstrating all of the attributes needed to be a successful Chief Executive at this hugely exciting time for the Company.”

Pibworth takes the helm at a crucial moment for SSE, which is positioned for growth within the evolving energy landscape. The company is focused on expanding its networks, renewables, and flexibility offerings, which will require leadership capable of navigating the complex and often volatile energy market. Pibworth’s expertise and vision will be key in driving sustainable growth while creating long-term value for shareholders.

As part of his remuneration package, Pibworth’s salary will start at £970,000 per year when he assumes the CEO position in July 2025. This will increase to £1,050,000 in April 2026, in line with the company’s Directors’ Remuneration Policy, subject to shareholder approval at the AGM. His package will also include additional compensation, such as a pension allowance, an Annual Incentive Plan, and participation in the company’s long-term Performance Share Plan.

Alistair Phillips-Davies, who will step down from his role as CEO at the AGM, will continue to contribute to the company as non-Executive Chair of SSEN Distribution. His retirement marks the conclusion of a remarkable leadership tenure at SSE, aligning with the company’s remuneration policy.

This transition further solidifies SSE’s strategic focus on the energy transition, as it positions itself to lead in a rapidly changing industry.
