SoftBank Group is reportedly planning to invest $50 billion in Malaysia, with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI), emerging technologies and data centres, according to a Bloomberg report citing Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said that SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son had identified potential investment locations in Kuching, Sarawak, and peninsular Malaysia. The plans followed a video conference between the 2 earlier in the week, the report stated.
The proposed investment comes as Malaysia seeks to establish itself as an “AI nation” by 2030. Earlier this year, the government launched a national AI action plan aimed at strengthening the country’s AI capabilities and infrastructure.
SoftBank has already taken steps towards expanding its technology presence in the region. On 8 October, the company signed a framework agreement with Singapore-based Grab and Malaysia’s Petroleum Sarawak Berhad to explore AI and digital infrastructure development in Sarawak. The proposed areas of collaboration include AI computing services and advanced technologies.
Other major technology companies have also announced substantial investments in Malaysia. Google committed $2 billion in 2024 to develop its first data centre and cloud region in the country. Amazon Web Services outlined plans to invest $6.2 billion through 2038, while Microsoft announced a $2.2 billion investment in cloud and AI infrastructure and other digital initiatives.
Malaysia has attracted significant capital into its data centre sector. According to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, data centre-related investments reached 385.7 billion ringgit, equivalent to $94 billion, between 2021 and the first half of 2026.
If realised, SoftBank’s proposed investment would add to Malaysia’s efforts to expand its digital infrastructure and strengthen its position in the regional AI ecosystem.
