In a renewed push into augmented reality, Snap’s AR-focused unit, Specs, has partnered with Qualcomm to develop a new version of its AI-powered Spectacles glasses.
The upcoming glasses will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR technology to enhance on-device AI capabilities, graphics performance and multiuser digital experiences. The aim is to deliver a more advanced and immersive AR experience.
Spectacles have been under development for several years. After the last public release in 2019, access to the device has largely been limited to developers since 2024. With this new collaboration and the creation of a dedicated unit for Spectacles, Snap is now strengthening its focus on the product.
CEO Evan Spiegel said the partnership is expected to significantly improve the technology behind Spectacles. The move reflects the company’s broader strategy to expand its presence in the AR space.
The new AI-powered glasses are expected to be launched later this year. The update is likely to attract users interested in augmented reality and interactive features similar to Snapchat filters.
