A new upgrade has been introduced to ChatGPT’s memory system, aimed at improving how the AI uses information from past conversations. The update is designed to help the chatbot better retain user preferences, ongoing discussions, and personal context over time, while also addressing challenges related to outdated or irrelevant memories as usage scales.
OpenAI explained in a blog post that the refreshed system is built on a redesigned architecture called “Dreaming.” This background process organizes and updates information collected from earlier chats, allowing ChatGPT to maintain relevant context without users needing to repeat details in every interaction. The rollout is currently available for Plus and Pro subscribers in the US, with expansion planned for additional regions and Free and Go users in the coming weeks.
The feature builds on earlier memory capabilities introduced over the past two years. In 2024, OpenAI launched Saved Memories, which allowed users to explicitly ask ChatGPT to remember specific details. In 2025, the system was further expanded so the chatbot could reference past conversations using an earlier version of Dreaming.
The updated system focuses on 3 key areas: retaining useful context from past conversations, applying user preferences more consistently, and keeping stored information relevant as circumstances change over time.
OpenAI also shared internal benchmark results showing performance improvements across these areas. Factual recall increased from 67.9% to 82.8%, preference adherence improved from 55.3% to 71.3%, and time-sensitive memory task performance rose from 52.2% to 75.1%.
Along with these improvements, users will now have access to a new memory summary page. This page allows users to view what ChatGPT has learned over time, correct stored information, delete details, or guide what should be remembered in future conversations. The company also noted a significant reduction in computing resources required to run Dreaming, which is expected to support wider availability and increased memory capacity for existing Plus and Pro users.
