Vikram-1 mission set to mark India’s first privately built orbital rocket launch

India’s private space industry is set for a major breakthrough as Skyroot Aerospace prepares to launch Vikram-1, the country’s first privately built orbital rocket. The mission is expected to take place soon from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

Skyroot CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana said the company is currently focused on final preparations for the 23-meter rocket ahead of the launch.

Vikram-1 has been developed for small satellite missions and features a liquid-fuelled module capable of placing satellites into precise orbital positions. The mission will test several key systems while also carrying customer payloads into space.

The launch builds on the company’s earlier success with the Vikram-S mission, which helped validate several technologies now being used in Vikram-1.

Skyroot has emerged as one of India’s leading private space startups after raising $60 million and becoming the country’s first space-tech unicorn. The company is now targeting international markets, with a major focus on customers in the US and Europe.

Chandana said demand for reliable launch services remains strong globally and believes companies that establish operational rockets early will gain a competitive advantage in the growing space sector.

“The market is good enough to absorb multiple players right now but the early players will have the advantage because the rocket is proven,” Chandana said.

The upcoming Vikram-1 mission is being closely watched as a key moment for India’s expanding private space ecosystem and its ambitions in the global commercial launch market.
