OpenAI is working on a feature that will allow users to log into external applications using their ChatGPT account. According to a web page released on Tuesday, the company is currently assessing developer interest in this service.
With 600 million monthly active users, OpenAI aims to broaden its reach beyond AI chatbots. A “Sign in with ChatGPT” feature would place the company in direct competition with Apple, Google, and Microsoft, all of which provide similar login options.
OpenAI appears to have a wide-ranging target audience. The developer form inquires about companies with fewer than 1,000 weekly users, as well as those with over 100 million users each week. It also asks how developers implement AI features and if they are users of the OpenAI API.
Earlier this month, OpenAI introduced a preview of the feature for developers in Codex CLI, the company’s open-source AI tool. Users were able to connect their ChatGPT Free, Plus, or Pro accounts to API accounts. Plus users received $5 in API credits, while Pro users got $50.
This initiative aligns with OpenAI’s goal to extend ChatGPT into various sectors, including online shopping, social media, and personal devices. CEO Sam Altman announced in 2023 that the company would investigate a “sign in with OpenAI” feature in 2024. Now, in 2025, OpenAI appears to be taking significant steps toward those plans.
The development is part of a larger trend where tech companies are broadening their platforms. Current providers of generic login services have recently shifted to Passkeys, which offer enhanced security and improved user experience.
OpenAI has not yet revealed when the login feature will be accessible to all users. It remains uncertain how many companies have registered. ChatGPT has rapidly become one of the most popular applications globally, providing a strong basis for offering login services.
