Shanghai Xingshu Tiansuan Space Technology Co. has launched the first satellite constellation of its ambitious space-based computing project, marking the beginning of a plan to deploy 1,000 satellites in orbit.
The initiative focuses on space-based computing, where data is processed directly in space instead of transmitting large volumes of raw data back to Earth. The technology is designed to handle AI and remote-sensing workloads in orbit, improving efficiency and reducing reliance on ground-based processing.
According to the company, the successful launch is a significant milestone towards the commercial operation of China’s first space-based computing network.
The announcement came as Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, where he positioned China as a leading force in shaping a new global AI ecosystem.
The development also comes as SpaceX, following its merger with xAI in February, continues to advance its own space-based computing initiatives aimed at accelerating AI development.
Supporters of space-based computing say processing data in orbit and sending back only the final results, rather than raw data, can significantly reduce latency and ease bandwidth demands on communication networks.
