A new health-focused AI feature could soon make Samsung’s Galaxy Watch more useful for users vulnerable to sudden fainting episodes. The smartwatch may soon be able to warn users about vasovagal syncope (VVS) up to 5 minutes before an episode occurs, helping them take precautions in advance.
The feature uses artificial intelligence along with a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor to monitor body signals and detect early warning signs linked to fainting. Once a possible episode is identified, the watch can send an alert, giving users enough time to sit down, seek help or avoid situations that could lead to serious falls or injuries.
Samsung reportedly tested the technology on 132 people during clinical evaluations. The results showed 90% sensitivity and 64% specificity, indicating a strong ability to detect potential fainting events before they happen.
The feature is expected to arrive on the Galaxy Watch6 and newer smartwatch models after receiving necessary approvals.
Vasovagal syncope is considered one of the most common causes of fainting and is believed to affect around 40% of people at least once in their lifetime. The upcoming feature could offer added safety and peace of mind for users who are concerned about sudden blackouts or unexpected fainting episodes.
