Facebook friendship turns into ₹38 lakh honey-trap fraud in Hyderabad

A 70-year-old retired employee from Hyderabad has allegedly lost ₹38 lakh after cyber fraudsters built a relationship with him through Facebook and later used threats to extort money.

According to Hyderabad cybercrime police, the victim accepted a friend request from a fake Facebook profile that appeared to belong to a woman. After gaining his trust, the fraudster allegedly asked him for money on different pretexts and later engaged him in intimate conversations.

The fraudsters then allegedly threatened to implicate the victim in a case involving the sexual exploitation of a minor. They also reportedly posed as police officials and demanded money from him to avoid legal action.

Police have arrested a youth from West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh in connection with the case.

Authorities have advised victims of cyber fraud to report incidents immediately by calling 1930 or filing a complaint through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal.
