OpenClaw launches official mobile apps to expand AI agent access

Expanding access to its autonomous AI platform, OpenClaw has launched its official mobile applications for Android and iPhone. The announcement was made on X, marking one of the project’s biggest updates since it gained attention earlier this year for its open-source AI agents.

Previously, many users accessed OpenClaw through messaging platforms such as Telegram and WhatsApp. The new apps provide a dedicated way to interact with AI agents directly from smartphones, making the experience more convenient as AI assistants continue expanding beyond desktop devices.

The apps work through the OpenClaw Gateway, which securely connects users to their AI agents, language models, and tools. Instead of running AI models on the phone, the app links to a Gateway hosted on a personal computer, cloud server, or another user-controlled system.

Once connected, users can chat with AI agents using text or voice, approve tasks, monitor automated workflows, and receive notifications from anywhere. Users can also choose to grant access to features such as the camera, location, contacts, calendar, reminders, photos, and screen content. These permissions are optional and require user approval. With access, AI agents can help organise schedules, analyse images, manage reminders, and perform other daily tasks.

The launch reflects the growing shift towards agentic AI, where AI systems are designed to complete tasks after receiving user permission instead of simply answering questions. The dedicated mobile apps also remove a major limitation for iPhone users, who previously relied on third-party messaging platforms.

OpenClaw is an open-source AI assistant that allows users to build and customise AI agents while maintaining control over where their data and AI models are hosted. The project gained wider attention after the launch of MoltBook, an experimental AI-driven social platform. Although researchers later found that some activity came from humans posing as AI agents, the project sparked broader discussions about autonomous AI. Following founder Peter Steinberger’s move to OpenAI earlier this year, development has been managed by the OpenClaw Foundation, with OpenAI stating it plans to support the foundation, though no details have been disclosed.

While OpenClaw is still an early-stage project and some users have reported inconsistent performance, the new mobile apps represent another step towards making AI agents practical digital assistants for everyday use.
