Mustafa Suleyman warns AI could automate most office jobs within 12 to 18 months

The rapid rise of AI may soon transform the global workforce in ways many are not prepared for, according to Microsoft’s AI chief Mustafa Suleyman.

In an interview with a financial newspaper, Suleyman said AI systems are advancing to a point where most white-collar jobs could be automated within 12 to 18 months. He noted that not only coders, but also lawyers, accountants, project managers and marketers could see their roles significantly changed by AI tools.

“White-collar jobs – those sitting in front of computers, whether lawyers, accountants, project managers, or marketers – most of these tasks will be fully automated by AI within the next 12 to 18 months,” Suleyman explained.

He said Microsoft is aiming to expand its presence in the enterprise segment with what he described as “professional-grade AGI.” This refers to AI models capable of performing nearly all the tasks handled by human professionals. Such systems would allow companies to automate routine knowledge work at scale.

His remarks come as businesses increasingly adopt AI solutions. Recently, Anthropic’s Claude Cowork drew attention in the stock market after raising concerns about the future of SaaS companies such as Infosys and TCS.

Suleyman also suggested that building AI models will soon become much easier. He compared it to creating online content. “Creating a new model will be as simple as making a podcast or writing a blog. In the future, it will be possible to design AI tailored to the needs of every institution and individual on Earth,” he said.

He added that within the next 2 to 3 years, AI agents could become more efficient at managing workflows in large organisations.

The Microsoft executive also indicated that the company plans to strengthen its own AI capabilities. Following a new agreement with OpenAI, Microsoft aims to reduce reliance on external models and focus on internal development. “We decided that this was a moment when we have to set about delivering on true AI self-sufficiency,” Suleyman said.

He hinted that Microsoft’s new AI models could be launched in 2026.
