Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) has appointed Janice Washington as Vice President, Global Talent, according to an announcement shared by HR Today on LinkedIn.
Washington brings more than 14 years of experience spanning global talent management, leadership development, organisational development, executive coaching, early-career programmes and learning strategy. Her career includes roles and experience with financial and professional-services organisations including The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), Moody’s and Morgan Stanley.
Her appointment comes at a time when MUFG is placing increasing emphasis on integrating its global talent strategy with business priorities, particularly around leadership development, specialised capabilities and internal mobility.
MUFG’s current human capital strategy identifies human capital as a critical component of its competitiveness. The group says its approach is built around two broad priorities: strengthening business competitiveness and creating an agile culture that enables employees to take on challenges. It is also expanding opportunities for autonomous career development, specialised skills and internal mobility.
MUFG operates in more than 40 countries and, as of March 2025, approximately 65% of its total workforce was hired overseas, according to the group. MUFG says it has established a common global talent framework and conducts cross-regional talent management meetings across business areas to support talent development from a global perspective.
The organisation has also been increasing the number of overseas employees moving into management and executive roles. As of March 2025, 11 overseas employees, including one woman, had been appointed as executive officers at MUFG Bank, according to the group’s disclosures.
Against this backdrop, global talent management increasingly extends beyond traditional HR administration. It involves identifying critical capabilities, developing leadership pipelines, planning succession and ensuring that talent can move across markets and business lines as organisational priorities change.
That direction is also reflected in MUFG’s own Global Talent Management mandate. A current MUFG posting for the Vice President, Global Talent Management function lists responsibilities including talent reviews, succession and contingency planning, workforce planning, leadership development, promotion processes, internal mobility and career development. The role also calls for the use of quantitative analysis and predictive modelling to assess workforce requirements and talent gaps.
Her public professional profile highlights experience in talent and organisational development as well as leadership and learning programmes. She has also held an Associate Certified Coach credential from the International Coaching Federation and has recently focused on areas including people analytics and AI-enabled workforce practices.
Her earlier experience at Moody’s also included work around cultural agility and development. Country Navigator, which featured Washington as a talent and organisational development professional at Moody’s, cites her work in developing cultural agility across the organisation.
This combination of talent development, leadership coaching and organisational capability is increasingly relevant as financial institutions rethink how they identify and develop talent amid changing business models and skills requirements.
MUFG has itself identified digital talent development as an urgent priority. The group says it has implemented programmes to develop digital specialists, while also requiring employees to build baseline digital capabilities. Its broader talent strategy includes specialised hiring, structured development programmes and career pathways designed to allow employees to deepen expertise without necessarily moving through traditional cross-functional career tracks.
MUFG’s own disclosures acknowledge that organisations need to understand both the quantity and quality of talent required to execute business strategies and allocate that talent in a timely manner. The group has consequently positioned the alignment of business strategy and HR strategy as a key priority. Washington’s move into the global talent leadership function comes against this backdrop. Her experience across talent development, organisational development, leadership and coaching adds another layer to MUFG’s ongoing effort to build a more globally integrated talent pipeline.
For MUFG, the appointment is therefore not simply another senior HR move. It reflects the increasingly strategic role of talent management in a financial institution operating across markets, business lines and increasingly specialised skill domains.
