Efforts to tackle online fraud in Mizoram have resulted in financial relief for victims, with police recovering and returning more than Rs 1 crore this year. The department has also arrested 9 alleged cybercriminals and expanded its coordination, investigation and public awareness activities.

Cybercrime recovery and arrests

According to Mizoram Police, Rs 1.06 crore was recovered through the Money Restoration Module (MRM) and other legal procedures, including court orders and measures taken after investigations.

On July 27, the state government formally notified the State Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (S4C) as a separate unit under Mizoram Police. The centre coordinates cybercrime detection, investigation and prosecution. Its responsibilities also include prevention measures, public awareness, social media monitoring and emergency response.

The Cyber Crime police station arrested 9 alleged cybercriminals from different parts of the state this year. Police also worked with law enforcement agencies in other states to investigate cases and acted on complaints involving indecent online content, leading to the removal of several unlawful URLs from social media platforms.

The S4C also resolved 28 grievances through its grievance redressal module. These cases involved people whose bank accounts had been blocked despite their alleged lack of knowledge of, or involvement in, transfers of fraudulently obtained money.

Awareness programmes and reporting channels

Mizoram Police conducted 89 cybercrime awareness programmes in schools and colleges this year, reaching 9,376 students. The department also held talk shows and question-and-answer sessions on television and radio, while sharing cyber safety information through its social media platforms.

Police have urged victims of online financial fraud to report incidents immediately through the national cybercrime helpline 1930, available 24/7, or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in.

People can also seek assistance at the Cyber Crime police station on the 3rd floor of the SP Aizawl Office building in the Treasury Square area of Aizawl.
