Microsoft claims that Aurora, its latest AI model, can accurately predict air quality, typhoons, storms, and other weather phenomena. This model was developed using over one million hours of data collected from satellites, radar, weather stations, simulations, and past forecasts.
In a recent paper published in Nature and a blog post last week, Microsoft detailed how Aurora can forecast atmospheric conditions more swiftly and accurately than traditional meteorological methods. The performance of the AI model can also be enhanced with additional data to provide more precise predictions for specific weather events.
AI-driven weather models have existed for a while. For example, Google DeepMind has introduced several models in recent years, including WeatherNext, which the lab claims surpasses some of the top forecasting systems globally.
Microsoft is positioning Aurora as one of the most sophisticated models in the industry and a crucial resource for research institutions dedicated to weather science, as noted in a TechCrunch review on Monday, May 26, 2025.
During testing, Aurora successfully predicted the landfall of Typhoon Doksuri in the Philippines four days ahead of time, outperforming several expert forecasts. Microsoft also indicated that Aurora exceeded the National Hurricane Center’s five-day forecast during the 2022-2023 tropical cyclone season. Additionally, the AI model accurately forecasted a significant sandstorm in Iraq in 2022.
Although its training required considerable computing resources, Aurora is regarded as highly efficient. It can produce forecasts in seconds, unlike traditional systems that may require hours on supercomputers.
Microsoft has revealed that it has made Aurora’s source code and model weights publicly accessible. The company has also begun incorporating the technology into the MSN Weather app, featuring a specialized version that provides hourly forecasts with cloud information.
