Microsoft redesigns Teams meeting controls to prevent screen-sharing and call-ending mistakes

Microsoft has acknowledged that the in-meeting interface of Microsoft Teams has become increasingly crowded and is introducing a redesigned user experience aimed at reducing accidental clicks and making key meeting controls easier to use.

The update comes as Teams has continued to add new meeting features over time, resulting in a more complex interface that can lead users to accidentally perform actions such as sharing their screen, raising their hand or leaving a meeting.

According to Microsoft, customer feedback and usage data highlighted that important controls were becoming difficult to navigate, increasing the risk of misclicks during virtual meetings.

“As Microsoft Teams has added meeting capabilities over time, the meeting controls and share panel have grown crowded, contributing to mis-clicks between high-impact actions like Share, Leave, and Raise hand, and to accidental shares of unintended content. Drawing on extensive customer feedback and telemetry, we’re introducing two coordinated updates: simplified meeting controls and a redesigned share panel. Together, they make core actions easier to find, reduce accidental clicks, and give users more confidence when sharing content.”

As part of the redesign, meeting controls will be repositioned to the center of the interface, while the Leave button will be moved to a separate location to help prevent accidental meeting exits. Less frequently used features will be placed under a “More” menu, and users will have the ability to pin, unpin and rearrange controls based on their preferences.

Microsoft is also introducing significant improvements to content sharing. A new two-step confirmation process will help users avoid unintentionally sharing their screens. The updated sharing experience will include live previews of shared content and a cleaner tab-based layout designed to improve navigation and visibility.

The company said the refreshed Teams experience is intended to make meetings more intuitive while giving users greater confidence when managing calls and sharing information.

Microsoft plans to begin rolling out the new meeting experience to targeted users in early July 2026, with deployment expected to be completed by the end of the month. A broader global rollout is scheduled to conclude in late August 2026.

The update represents one of the most notable user interface changes to Teams in recent years, reflecting Microsoft’s focus on improving usability and reducing common meeting-related errors.
