Mumbai: Maharashtra Police is set to deepen its use of artificial intelligence in citizen-facing policing, with an AI-powered safety platform being introduced to help residents access police services and receive quicker assistance during emergencies.

The proposed initiative signals a broader shift in the state’s policing strategy, with technology increasingly being used not only for investigation and crime detection but also to improve how citizens interact with law-enforcement agencies.

According to a recent report shared by The CSR Journal, the AI-enabled platform is expected to make it easier for citizens to seek police assistance and access relevant services. The move comes as Maharashtra Police continues to expand its digital capabilities across emergency response, citizen services and cybercrime investigation.

AI moves deeper into Maharashtra policing

The proposed citizen-focused platform builds on Maharashtra Police’s wider adoption of AI. The state has already deployed MahaCrimeOS AI, an investigation platform developed through collaboration involving Maharashtra’s MARVEL initiative, Microsoft and CyberEye.

The system is designed to assist investigators by processing case information, identifying relevant details, suggesting investigative steps and automating parts of the administrative workload associated with cybercrime investigations. Microsoft has said the platform has helped investigators significantly reduce the time required for certain investigative processes.

The technology is also available in English, Hindi and Marathi, helping investigators work with the platform in multiple languages.

The state’s broader AI strategy is being driven through MARVEL (Maharashtra Advanced Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement), which is focused on applying emerging technologies to policing and law enforcement.

1930 positioned as a rapid-response channel for cyber fraud

Alongside the new AI-enabled safety initiative, Maharashtra’s cybercrime response ecosystem is placing renewed emphasis on the 1930 cyber-fraud helpline.

The helpline is intended to enable victims of online financial fraud to report incidents quickly, allowing authorities and financial institutions to act while the movement of fraudulent funds can potentially still be stopped.

The importance of speed has become increasingly evident as digital financial fraud grows. Recent reporting said the 1930 helpline helped prevent or recover around ₹162 crore linked to cyber fraud between January and July 2026, highlighting the role of rapid reporting and coordination between authorities, banks and payment intermediaries.

Towards more responsive digital policing

The combination of AI-enabled citizen services, emergency response systems and faster cybercrime reporting reflects a larger transformation in how police departments are approaching public safety.

For citizens, the objective is straightforward: make it easier to reach the police, access information and seek assistance without navigating complicated processes. For law-enforcement agencies, AI can potentially help officers process information faster and spend more time on intervention, investigation and victim assistance.

Maharashtra Police’s expanding technology ecosystem therefore points towards a model of policing in which AI is increasingly positioned as a support layer across the citizen journey — from reporting an incident and seeking emergency help to investigating a crime and responding to cyber fraud.

As these systems are rolled out further, their effectiveness will ultimately depend on accessibility, response times, data protection and the ability to integrate AI tools with existing police and emergency-response infrastructure.
