Artificial intelligence is gaining acceptance among government school teachers, although concerns around training, institutional support and student data privacy remain. A new JanAI report based on a national survey of 797 government school teachers across Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Maharashtra highlights the growing use of AI in classrooms.
The report found that 72% of teachers have a positive view of AI in education, while 26% use AI tools regularly. Teachers mainly use AI to simplify difficult concepts, create examples and activities, and prepare worksheets and assessments.
AI adoption is also taking place in schools without computer laboratories. Many teachers are accessing these tools through their personal phones. While teachers increasingly see AI as a useful teaching aid, student over dependence emerged as their biggest concern.
Among teachers who said AI makes them personally more effective, 86% were also concerned that students could become over dependent on AI. This compares with 64% of teachers overall. The findings suggest that teachers see AI as beneficial for their own work but potentially risky for students without proper guidance.
Privacy is another major concern. More than half of the teachers using AI said they had entered a student’s name, marks or photograph into an AI tool at some point. The report noted that confidence in protecting student privacy did not always lead to safer practices.
Interestingly, concerns about AI replacing teachers were largely missing from both structured and open ended responses. Instead, teachers highlighted school rules, state policy, training and having a designated person to approach when something goes wrong as important for responsible AI use.
The report comes months before India introduces an AI and Computational Thinking curriculum for Classes 3 to 12, which will be phased in from the 2026 to 27 academic session.
JanAI said this is the first edition of an ongoing tracking exercise. It plans to continue monitoring the same teacher population, expand coverage to more states and release updated findings every quarter.
Based on the findings, JanAI also plans to identify, train and organise 50,000 rural government school teachers as AI change agents over the next 12 to 18 months.
