Karnataka pushes AI adoption across governance and public services

Karnataka is strengthening its focus on AI-driven governance as the state government works to integrate artificial intelligence into public administration and citizen services.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence implementation workshop, Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh said the state is moving beyond positioning Karnataka only as an AI innovation hub and is actively building AI-enabled governance systems.

“The state has taken significant steps to institutionalise AI within governance systems. The Karnataka AI Cell established under the Centre for e-Governance is playing a critical role in guiding AI adoption, ensuring standardisation, avoiding duplication, and promoting safe and responsible implementation across departments,” Rajneesh said.

She highlighted that Karnataka is already witnessing the benefits of AI adoption in several areas, including attendance management, multilingual document summarisation, grievance redressal, civic platforms and language technologies.

According to the state government, the proposed AI Centre of Excellence will help accelerate the development, adoption and ethical implementation of AI technologies across public sector functions. The initiative aims to improve transparency, responsiveness and operational efficiency in governance and citizen services.

Rajneesh also stressed the importance of preparing government systems and citizens for the long-term impact of AI on employment and administrative processes.

“As governments, we must also acknowledge that AI will significantly influence employment patterns, skill requirements, and administrative processes. Therefore, capacity-building becomes extremely important. Civil servants, public institutions, and citizens must be empowered with AI awareness and digital competencies so that technology adoption remains inclusive and meaningful,” she said.

The workshop was organised by the IndiaAI Mission under the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

The initiative reflects Karnataka’s broader strategy to strengthen digital governance infrastructure while ensuring responsible and inclusive AI adoption across departments and public services.
