At a major infrastructure milestone in India’s AI journey, Jeet Adani underlined that artificial intelligence depends as much on power as it does on code. Speaking at the foundation event of the Google Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, he said, “AI may be written in code, but it runs on electricity.”
The project will see Google invest $15 billion, making it one of the largest foreign direct investments in India. The facility is being developed with partners such as AdaniConneX and will rely on infrastructure similar to that powering platforms like Search, Workspace, and YouTube.
Adani also announced that the Adani Group has committed $100 billion to build a full ecosystem supporting India’s AI ambitions. This includes investments in energy generation, transmission, digital networks, and data centres.
He stressed that future global leaders in AI will be those who can design advanced systems and scale them efficiently. Highlighting current capacity, he noted, “India stands at approximately 1.3 gigawatts of data centre capacity. Just for context, here today, we are envisioning nearly one gigawatt in a single location. That contrast reflects the scale of transformation ahead.”
Adani also pointed out a shift in India’s digital infrastructure. While cities like Mumbai and Chennai have traditionally served as key digital entry points, Visakhapatnam is emerging as a new gateway with upcoming undersea cable landing infrastructure.
Affordability, he said, will be critical for widespread AI adoption. “For AI to transform our economy and society, it must be affordable, and affordability begins with energy. Lower energy reduces the cost of compute, of training new models, and of inference.” He added, “The true power of AI will be measured by how widely it can be used.”
The foundation stone for the project was laid by N. Chandrababu Naidu, with Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Ram Mohan Naidu also present at the event.
