Highlighting its growing focus on space safety, ISRO has taken multiple steps to prevent potential satellite collisions, as detailed in its latest SSA report.
The agency carried out 18 collision avoidance maneuvers to steer its satellites away from possible crashes. It also analysed over 150,000 alerts related to potential congestion in Earth’s orbit.
Most of these maneuvers were performed in low Earth orbit. This included an important Risk Mitigation Maneuver for the NASA-ISRO NISAR mission, ensuring safe operations in increasingly crowded space conditions.
In addition, ISRO made 2 maneuver-plan adjustments in 2025 for Chandrayaan-2. These changes were carried out to avoid possible close interactions with NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
Chandrayaan-2 required separate adjustments during 2025 to prevent close approaches with NASA’s orbiter, showing the level of precision needed in managing space traffic.
By combining these preventive actions with routine satellite maintenance, ISRO continues to strengthen its approach to space safety. The agency is also working in coordination with NASA and private space players to manage risks more effectively.
The latest efforts reflect ISRO’s preparedness to handle the challenges of an increasingly crowded space environment, where constant monitoring and timely intervention are critical.
