Creating the first version of a Reel could become easier for creators as Instagram rolls out First Draft, a new in-app editing feature. The tool can identify pauses, silences and similar sections in clips and automatically trim them to create a rough edit. The feature is currently rolling out to select devices on iOS.

Instagram First Draft: How it works

The Meta-owned social media platform announced First Draft on Tuesday as a way to help creators “get past the starting point” of editing their Reels. The feature generates an initial version that users can refine before publishing.

On an iPhone, users can select 1 or more clips and use the First Draft option to create an edited version. The tool identifies pauses, silences and similar moments in videos where creators are speaking to their audience, then removes those sections to produce a rough cut.

Creators can either publish the generated Reel or continue editing it in the full video editor. Instagram says all trims made through First Draft are reversible. Users can reorder, remove or adjust edits, or start the edit again from scratch.

The feature is designed to work with different video formats, including multi-clip montages, talking-head videos and day-in-the-life content.

To use First Draft, iOS users can open the Reels gallery, select 1 or more clips and tap the First Draft button at the bottom of the screen. They can then review the generated edit, continue to the full video editor or publish the Reel.

Users can also open Instagram’s camera, record a clip and tap the First Draft button to generate the initial edit.
