In a strategic move towards next-generation mobility, IndiGo has invested ₹10 crore in Sarla Aviation, marking its entry into the electric air taxi sector. The investment was made through IndiGo Ventures in January and reflects the airline’s growing interest in urban air mobility solutions.
Founded in 2023, Sarla Aviation is working on electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, commonly known as eVTOLs, aimed at transforming urban transport. Its flagship aircraft, “Shunya”, is planned for launch in Bengaluru by 2028.
The “Shunya” aircraft is being developed to carry up to 680 kg and accommodate 6 passengers, excluding the pilot. It is expected to operate using existing helipads located at hotels, hospitals, and tech parks, making it suitable for city-based aerial commuting.
Earlier, the startup raised $10 million in January last year in a funding round led by Accel. The round also saw participation from Binny Bansal, Nikhil Kamath, and Sriharsha Majety.
This investment comes after IndiGo’s previous non-binding partnership with Archer Aviation fell through due to timeline delays.
Globally, the eVTOL space is gaining traction with strong airline backing. Joby Aviation has received support from Delta Air Lines and Toyota Motor Corporation, while Archer Aviation has secured strategic investment from United Airlines.
