As Mercedes-Benz accelerates its focus on software-defined vehicles and autonomous driving, India is playing an increasingly important role in shaping the company’s global technology ecosystem, according to Chief Technology Officer Jörg Burzer.
During the unveiling of the new S-Class in Mumbai, Burzer highlighted the growing contribution of Indian talent to the automaker’s technology stack and future mobility ambitions. He said, “There is a piece of India in every Mercedes, and I hope to see even more of it in the future.”
India’s engineering teams are contributing across key areas such as software development, infotainment systems and autonomous driving technologies. Mercedes-Benz’s Bengaluru operations, established in 1996, have evolved into the company’s largest engineering and research centre outside Germany.
Burzer noted that the centre initially focused on hardware and powertrain technologies but has witnessed rapid growth in software capabilities over the past few years. He identified infotainment and autonomous driving as two major areas where Indian teams have built strong expertise.
The company is advancing Level 2++ driver assistance systems while also developing Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous driving technologies. Mercedes-Benz is working with Nvidia on future software architectures and AI-powered mobility solutions.
Burzer said modern automotive engineering requires close collaboration between software, electronics and mechanical systems. He emphasised that integrating advanced software into combustion-engine vehicles is more complex than in electric vehicles due to additional components such as transmissions and engines.
Mercedes-Benz also continues to invest in simulation, validation and AI-driven development to support the next phase of autonomous mobility. The Bengaluru centre contributes to both software and hardware activities, including manufacturing simulations and engineering operations.
Despite India accounting for a relatively small share of Mercedes-Benz’s global sales, its importance in technology development continues to grow. The company views India as a strategic hub for innovation and future mobility solutions.
