India sees 64.6M removable device cyber attacks, nearly 30% users affected

A sharp rise in offline cyber threats has been recorded in India, with Kaspersky reporting that nearly 29.8% of computer users faced on-device attacks in 2025. These threats were mainly delivered through USB drives, removable media, and other offline sources.

According to the report, a total of 64,631,897 local incidents were detected on user systems across India during the year. The findings place India among the top 80 countries globally in terms of exposure to local cyber threats.

Globally, cyberattacks increased by 7% in 2025 compared to 2024. The company said its systems identified close to 500,000 malicious files daily. It also highlighted a 59% rise in password stealer detections and a 51% increase in spyware activity worldwide.

The report further noted a growing trend of cyber threats impersonating popular AI tools, as attackers take advantage of the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence platforms.

Adrian Hia, Managing Director for Asia Pacific at Kaspersky, said malware hidden within encrypted files and complex installers remained a key concern in 2025. He added that the Asia-Pacific region saw a significant rise in spyware and password stealer attacks, which allow cybercriminals to access files and extract sensitive data.

He also pointed out that attackers are increasingly impersonating collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Google Drive to trick users into downloading malicious software. These attacks are aimed at stealing login credentials, banking details, and personal information.

The findings highlight the growing risks from both online and offline cyber threats, stressing the need for stronger awareness and security measures among users.
