India Approves Micron and Aequs Semiconductor SEZs, Signals Major Push for Local Manufacturing

In a groundbreaking decision that is set to enhance India’s domestic electronics and semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, the government has officially sanctioned the creation of two new Special Economic Zones (SEZs) focused on this sector. The proposals from Micron Semiconductor Technology India and Hubballi Durable Goods Cluster (Aequs Group) have received the green light, representing a crucial milestone in the country’s pursuit of self-sufficiency in high-tech production.

These approvals come after important changes to the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) regulations, aimed at attracting significant investments into these capital-intensive and import-reliant industries. The regulatory updates, revealed on June 3, 2025, are intended to promote high-tech manufacturing, bolster the semiconductor ecosystem, and create skilled job opportunities nationwide.

Micron Semiconductor Technology India plans to set up its SEZ facility in Sanand, Gujarat, covering an impressive area of 37.64 hectares. This ambitious initiative is backed by an estimated investment of Rs 13,000 crore and will concentrate on advanced semiconductor manufacturing.

On the other hand, Hubballi Durable Goods Cluster (Aequs Group) will construct its SEZ in Dharwad, Karnataka. This facility, which will span 11.55 hectares, is expected to involve an investment of Rs 100 crore and will focus on the production of electronic components.
