Cybercrime unit alerts public as crypto scam cases rise across India

As digital finance continues to grow, authorities in India have raised concerns over a sharp rise in crypto-related scams, particularly affecting users of digital wallets such as Trust Wallet.

Officials from the cybercrime unit said scammers often approach victims through peer-to-peer platforms. These conversations are then shifted to messaging apps like WhatsApp or Telegram, making the interaction appear normal and trustworthy in the early stages.

One of the most common tactics involves fake verification websites that closely resemble legitimate platforms. Users are tricked into connecting their wallets on these sites. Once access is granted, scammers can steal funds instantly, with little to no chance of recovery.

Authorities have urged users to stay cautious. They advise not connecting wallets to unknown websites, never sharing seed phrases, carefully checking links before clicking, and disconnecting any suspicious applications.

In case of suspected fraud, users are encouraged to report incidents by calling 1930 or by visiting the official portal at cybercrime.gov.in.

With cryptocurrency adoption rising rapidly across India, officials have warned that scams are also increasing at a similar pace, making awareness and caution essential for users.
