IMI, one of India’s leading corporate-sponsored business schools under the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group, has appointed Dr. Suresh Ramanathan as its Chief Executive Officer. In his new role, he will oversee leadership responsibilities across IMI’s campuses in Delhi, Kolkata, and Bhubaneswar.
Dr. Ramanathan brings extensive academic and industry experience, having taught at several globally recognised institutions. His teaching portfolio includes the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Texas A&M University’s Mays Business School, the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, HEC Paris, the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, and the Indian School of Business.
Before joining IMI, he served as Dean and Principal at the Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai. During his tenure, he strengthened academic standards and significantly improved the institution’s research output. He redesigned the research rewards system by prioritising journal quality over publication volume, leading to increased scholarly work published in ABDC A-level and higher-ranked journals.
He also fostered a stronger research culture through faculty seminars, collaborative sessions, and support for conferences, research databases, and analytical tools. In addition, he launched a PhD programme aligned with international academic standards to help scholars build globally competitive research capabilities.
Before entering academia, Dr. Ramanathan spent nearly 10 years in sales and strategy roles across the corporate sector. His professional journey included roles at Unilever (Brooke Bond), JWT, Lintas, MTV India, and McCann Erickson.
Over the years, he worked with major global brands including Citibank, PepsiCo, Nestlé, Coca-Cola, ITC Limited, and Britannia Industries, gaining strong expertise in marketing strategy and business leadership.
He has also designed and delivered executive education programmes globally, helping organisations address business challenges in emerging markets.
Commenting on his appointment, Dr. Ramanathan said, “IMI has a distinguished legacy in management education in India. I look forward to working with faculty, students and industry partners across the IMI campuses to further strengthen the institute’s research ecosystem, deepen industry engagement and build programmes that prepare leaders for a rapidly evolving global business environment.”
