Global financial system faces rising AI cyber risks, warns IMF chief

As AI capabilities advance rapidly, concerns are rising about their impact on global financial systems. International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has warned that the world is not prepared to handle the growing cybersecurity risks linked to AI.

Her remarks came just ahead of the IMF and World Bank spring meetings in Washington, and follow an emergency meeting held by US regulators with major banking leaders over emerging AI-related threats. “We don’t have the ability to us as a world to protect the international monetary system against massive cyber risks,” she said during a television interview.

Georgieva emphasised the urgent need for stronger safeguards, adding, “We are very keen to see more attention to the guardrails that are necessary to protect financial stability in a world of AI.” She also called for global cooperation, noting that while some countries have started addressing these risks, the threat is global and requires coordinated action.

The warning comes after Anthropic announced on April 7 that it is limiting the release of its new AI model, “Mythos.” The company cited concerns over the model’s ability to rapidly detect security vulnerabilities, which could be misused.

Anthropic is currently working with a group of major US companies to test the model. However, this approach has raised concerns that organisations outside the US may not have access to the same level of preparedness or safety measures.

The situation highlights growing fears that advanced AI systems could be used to exploit weaknesses in financial networks, posing risks to global stability.

As AI adoption accelerates, experts are increasingly calling for stronger regulatory frameworks and international collaboration to address emerging cyber threats.
