In a significant recognition of early robotics innovation, Honda Motor Co.’s P2 humanoid robot has been honoured as a “milestone” by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Unveiled in 1996, the P2 robot was a major breakthrough in humanoid robotics. It was an autonomous machine capable of smooth bipedal walking, even on uneven surfaces and while climbing stairs. At a time when most robots relied on wheels or four legs, P2 helped drive the development of human-like robots in Japan and across the world.

The IEEE Milestone recognition is awarded to technologies that have made a strong impact on society and industry. Only achievements that are at least 25 years old are considered for this honour.

At a ceremony held at Honda’s office in Saitama Prefecture near Tokyo, President and CEO Toshihiro Mibe said that the P2 “brought the world of science-fiction films into reality at once.”

Toru Takenaka, who led the development of P2, expressed hope for future innovation. He said he wants younger engineers to build robots that can become part of everyday life.

The technologies developed for P2 later contributed to the creation of ASIMO, which was introduced in 2000. ASIMO went on to demonstrate advanced capabilities such as dancing and kicking a ball. Before being retired in 2022, it became a global symbol of Japan’s progress in robotics.

This marks Honda’s second IEEE Milestone recognition. The company earlier received the honour in 2017 for its Electro Gyrocator, known as the world’s first map-based automotive navigation system.
