Cyber fraud cases rise steadily in Himachal as violent crimes also increase in 2024

Even as overall crime numbers declined in Himachal Pradesh in 2024, cybercrime cases continued to rise, highlighting growing concerns around online fraud and digital offences in the state, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report.

The report showed that cybercrime cases in Himachal increased steadily from 77 in 2022 to 127 in 2023, before reaching 148 cases in 2024. The cybercrime rate in the state stood at 2, while the charge-sheeting rate was recorded at 62.5%.

Fraud-related offences remained the biggest contributor to cybercrime cases. Out of 103 recorded computer-related offences, 98 cases involved cheating by impersonation. Overall, 114 cybercrime cases were linked to fraud, while 4 cases were related to extortion. Other offences included online cheating, unauthorised access to computer systems, and misuse of digital communication platforms.

Despite the rise in cyber offences, total criminal cases registered in Himachal fell to 12,071 in 2024 from 13,505 in 2023. In 2022, the state had recorded 13,231 criminal cases. The overall charge-sheeting rate stood at 80.7%.

Cases registered under Special and Local Laws (SLL) also declined. The state recorded 5,844 SLL cases in 2024 compared to 6,482 cases in 2023.

However, violent crimes witnessed a sharp rise. Himachal reported 2,091 violent crimes in 2024, up from 1,869 in 2023 and 1,858 in 2022. The state also recorded 84 murder cases during the year. The violent crime rate stood at 27.8.

Crimes against women remained largely unchanged. The state registered 1,605 cases in 2024 compared to 1,604 cases in 2023. The crime rate against women stood at 43.3, while the charge-sheeting rate was 69.7%. The number of rape cases declined slightly to 324 in 2024 from 344 in 2023.

Meanwhile, crimes against children increased to 794 cases in 2024, compared to 704 cases in 2023 and 740 cases in 2022.
