Fitbit Air gains AI-powered activity tracking and personalised health insights

Google is expanding the capabilities of its wearable health ecosystem with new features for Fitbit Air and the Google Health app. The updates focus on improving automatic workout detection, providing personalised health insights and helping users track changes in their well-being over time.

Fitbit Air improves AI-powered workout tracking

The upgraded activity detection system can now identify more than 100 types of activities, up from 10. These include strength training, swimming, racket sports and team sports.

Google says the system uses contextual reasoning to analyse workout routines, historical activity data and manual edits. With user permission, it can also consider location information. This approach is designed to make activity detection nearly 2x more accurate and reduce missed workouts by more than half.

Workouts lasting at least 15 minutes by default, with a sustained elevated heart rate, can be logged automatically. A summary is typically sent to the mobile app within 30 minutes. The system also learns from users’ confirmations and edits to improve future predictions.

The upgraded feature is scheduled to roll out to Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch 3, 4 and 5 later this month.

Google Health adds proactive health insights

Fitbit Air users with a Google Health Premium subscription will also gain access to Health Guardian features later this month. These tools track changes in health trends over time, including blood pressure and insulin resistance trends.

Users who meet the monthly wear requirements can receive reports at the beginning of each month. Google Health Coach can then help interpret changes, adjust fitness plans and provide personalised lifestyle guidance.

The Google Health app has also received more than 55 features and fixes since its introduction. Updates include additional customisation options for the Today tab, expanded health metrics, improved Coach memory and deeper integration with Apple Health.

These features require a Google Health Premium subscription, the Google Health app and an internet connection. Google says the tools are intended to support wellness and are not designed for medical diagnosis or treatment.
