Project Starline was a research project that Google unveiled in 2021 with the goal of redefining visual communication by creating the illusion that the other person is in the same room during remote chats. The tech behemoth declared at this year’s Google I/O that “Project Starline is evolving into a new 3D video communication platform” known as Google Beam.
Google said in a blog post that its new Beam platform converts 2D video feeds into lifelike 3D experiences using a “state-of-the-art AI volumetric video model.” Later this year, early adopters such as Salesforce, Citadel, NEC, Deloitte, and Duolingo will have access to the corporate-focused teleconferencing platform, according to the tech giant.
In case you were wondering, Beam creates the illusion that users are speaking to someone in the same room by using technology such as a six-camera array and a unique light field display. In terms of software, Google uses an AI model that creates a 3D appearance by utilizing video feed from cameras aimed at the user from various perspectives.
According to the tech giant, the hardware and AI-powered software “create a profound sense of dimensionality and depth,” enabling users to interpret tiny hints and initiate eye contact in a manner akin to face-to-face communication.
Beam transmits films at 60 frames per second and has “near-perfect” millimeter-level head tracking, according to Google. When used in conjunction with Google Meet, the technology can also provide real-time AI-powered speech translation that can replicate the speaker’s tone, voice, and facial expressions. Additionally, Google Meet and other well-known videoconferencing programs like Zoom will be included into the system.
It appears that Google has repacked Beam into a considerably smaller gadget than the initial prototype, which was somewhat large. By the end of the year, the tech behemoth claims to be partnering with HP to launch Beam devices.
