Google has reportedly started informing Android users about an upcoming change that will affect how Android device backups are counted against their Google Account storage. The company is said to be sending email notifications 45 days before the new policy takes effect, giving users time to prepare for the update.
According to the report, once the policy is implemented, Android backup data that was previously excluded from storage calculations will begin using the available Google Account storage space. This includes backups of SMS messages, call history, device settings, app settings and other device data.
The report also states that devices will stop creating new automatic backups if the account exceeds its storage limit. Users will need to free up storage space or upgrade to a larger Google storage plan before backups can continue.
Google is reportedly informing users about the estimated increase in storage usage caused by the new policy. In one example, the additional backup size was around 30MB. Earlier reports suggested the average increase could be approximately 40MB, indicating that the change is expected to have only a minimal impact for most users.
The company is also expected to introduce expanded backup controls for devices running Android 9 and later versions. These new settings will allow users to choose which apps and data categories are included in future backups, giving them greater control over what is backed up and restored on another device.
Users will reportedly be able to check how much storage their Android backups occupy through the Google One storage manager. From there, they can free up storage, purchase additional cloud storage or disable Android backups if needed.
