Google Tests iPhone-Like Swipe Animations for Chrome on Android

Google is introducing a new navigation feature to Chrome on Android that brings iPhone-style swipe animations, offering users smoother page transitions and a more interactive browsing experience.

This update adds a predictive transition effect that gives a visual preview of the next or previous screen when swiping forward or backward in the browser. The feature is built on Android’s Predictive Back system, first launched with Android 13, which shows users the destination screen before completing a swipe gesture.

In Chrome’s latest version 138, this swipe animation now appears when users navigate back or forward within a tab. If there is no page history in the tab, Chrome displays a grey background with its logo, indicating a return to an empty page. This functionality is being rolled out gradually and has now appeared for some users in the public version of Chrome after being previously hidden behind developer flags.

How to Turn On Swipe Animations in Chrome on Android:

Open Chrome and enter chrome://flags in the address bar.

Use the search bar to find #back-forward-transitions and #right-edge-goes-forward-gesture-nav.

Enable both flags and tap the “Relaunch” button that appears at the bottom to restart the browser.

Alternatively, directly enter chrome://flags#back-forward-transitions and chrome://flags#right-edge-goes-forward-gesture-nav in the address bar to enable them faster.

After restarting, swipe gestures in Chrome will now display the new animations.

Google has not enabled this feature by default, and as it is still under testing, users might encounter occasional visual glitches. If needed, the feature can be turned off by revisiting the same settings.

This development brings Chrome on Android closer to the gesture fluidity found on iOS devices and shows Google’s ongoing effort to enhance touch navigation in its mobile browser.
