Artificial intelligence is becoming a bigger part of everyday navigation tools. Google has announced new updates for Google Maps, including an AI-powered feature called Ask Maps and a redesigned driving experience known as Immersive Navigation.
Ask Maps: AI answers for real-world travel questions
The new Ask Maps feature allows users to ask detailed questions directly within the Google Maps app. Powered by Gemini AI models, the tool combines artificial intelligence with the platform’s mapping data to deliver personalised answers.
Users can tap the Ask Maps button and submit questions using text or voice. For example, they can ask whether it is better to drive or take the metro at a certain time or where they can stop for coffee along the route. Google Maps then analyses traffic conditions, travel time and nearby locations to suggest options and provide navigation directions.
The feature can also help with trip planning and discovering new places. Users planning a night out can ask questions such as where they can watch a live sports match while enjoying vegetarian appetisers. Ask Maps searches available data and provides insights such as popular menu items, atmosphere during match days and whether valet parking is available.
Responses are also personalised. The system considers places users have searched for or saved in the app. For instance, if someone often looks for vegetarian restaurants, the AI will prioritise similar options when suggesting places in a new city.
Users can also ask follow-up questions to refine results, such as which location offers easier parking or better accessibility.
According to Google, the AI feature uses data from more than 300 million places listed on Google Maps. It also draws insights from more than 500 million global contributors who share reviews, photos, ratings and updates.
Ask Maps has started rolling out in India and the United States on Android and iOS devices. It is currently available in English, with Hindi support expected soon.
Immersive Navigation enhances the driving experience
Alongside Ask Maps, Google also introduced Immersive Navigation, which the company describes as the biggest update to driving in Google Maps in more than a decade.
The feature adds redesigned visuals that provide a clearer and more intuitive navigation experience. Drivers can see 3D representations of surrounding buildings, terrain and overpasses along their route.
Google Maps also highlights important road elements such as lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights and stop signs when needed. This spatial view is powered by Gemini models using real-world imagery from Street View and aerial photos.
The update also offers improved route previews, helping drivers prepare for turns or lane changes in advance. Voice navigation instructions have been updated to sound more conversational.
Drivers can also compare alternate routes, such as a faster path with tolls or a slightly longer route with less traffic. The app will also alert users to disruptions like road construction or crashes based on community reports.
Immersive Navigation is beginning to roll out in the United States and will expand gradually to Android and iOS devices, vehicles with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and cars with Google built-in.
