Google rolls out Android Auto update to fix repeated disconnections

Android Auto users who faced repeated connection problems can now get a fix through the latest update. Google has started rolling out a new version that addresses issues introduced after the Android Auto 17.1 update.

Android Auto update addresses major connection bug

Earlier this year, Google introduced a major Android Auto redesign showcased during the Android Show I/O Edition in May 2026. The update brought Gemini Intelligence features, YouTube video playback and the Material 3 Expressive design.

Soon after, users began reporting connectivity problems, with several complaints linked to Android Auto 17.1. The issues included repeated disconnections and, in some cases, a frozen Android Auto screen that made the system unusable.

Android Auto community specialist Venkatesh has now confirmed that the latest update fixes the problem. Users experiencing the issue are advised to update the app to Android Auto 17.4 or a newer version. Google says the connection problem should be resolved after installing the update.

Users reported frequent disconnections

The issue continued for months. On July 10, a user on the Android Auto support forum said the same problems continued after updating to version 17.2, regardless of the car brand or smartphone model.

The user reported that Android Auto disconnected every 5 minutes. Several others responded with similar complaints, indicating that the issue was affecting users across different devices and vehicles.

Another user said the connection dropped every 3 minutes after installing version 17.2. According to the user, the audio would stop first, followed by the Android Auto screen freezing. The wireless connection receiver would then restart the Android Auto session automatically.

The user also said restarting the smartphone did not resolve the problem.
