Google may collaborate with Marvell to advance AI chip development

In a move aimed at strengthening its artificial intelligence infrastructure, Google is reportedly in discussions with Marvell Technology to develop two new chips designed to improve the efficiency of running AI models.

According to a report citing people familiar with the matter, the collaboration could focus on building a memory processing unit that works alongside Google’s tensor processing unit (TPU), as well as a new TPU specifically designed for AI workloads.

The development is part of Google’s broader strategy to position its TPUs as a strong alternative to Nvidia’s widely used GPUs. TPUs have already become an important contributor to the company’s cloud business, as Google continues to demonstrate returns on its growing AI investments.

The report also noted that both companies are working towards finalising the design of the memory processing unit as early as next year. Once completed, the chip is expected to move into the testing and production phase.

However, the details of the discussions have not been independently verified, and both Google and Marvell Technology have not responded to requests for comment so far.

If the partnership moves forward, it could further accelerate Google’s push into custom AI hardware and strengthen its position in the competitive AI infrastructure market.
