The legal industry is seeing faster adoption of generative AI, and Google is now expanding its enterprise offering to address this demand. On August 25, the company introduced new tools and plug-ins for lawyers and law firms through Gemini Enterprise for Legal.
The new suite is designed to help legal teams manage routine and complex tasks with AI, allowing lawyers to focus on higher-value work while keeping data secure and confidential. It also includes dedicated plug-ins that connect Gemini Enterprise with legal software and data platforms, along with AI agents built to handle specialised legal and administrative tasks.
Google also plans to introduce industry-specific tools for financial services and other sectors.
The move comes as lawyers increasingly use generative AI for legal research, drafting filings and other tasks. In a survey of 2,022 law graduates in the US, 48% said AI was an “essential” part of their daily work. Another 30% had access to AI tools but rarely used them, while 22% did not use AI in their current roles.
Law firms are also applying AI to client and case management to reduce costs and improve efficiency. A 2026 report found that firms are investing heavily in AI as the sector remains in the early stages of a technology-led transformation.
“Gemini Enterprise for Legal provides an integrated, fully governed environment configured for rapid deployment across firms and corporate legal departments,” Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud, said. “What makes the difference is the system built around the model: skills that enhance a firm’s own expertise, connections into the systems where matters actually live, agents that complete work rather than return suggestions, and an open ecosystem to extend all of it — with governance running underneath all four,” he added.
Gemini Enterprise for Legal allows users to select from multiple AI models. It can securely connect with legal technology platforms from Thomson Reuters, Harvey, Legora and others.
The platform can automate regulatory monitoring, data discovery, DSAR responses, contract review and negotiation, document redaction for motions to seal and NDA drafting. It can also connect with core legal systems using secure MCP connectors.
Gemini Enterprise was launched in October last year to attract corporate customers. Google now faces competition from AI companies such as Anthropic, which introduced specialised legal workflow tools in February 2026.
That announcement included tools for contract review, NDA analysis and compliance monitoring, alongside finance, sales and data analytics applications under Claude Cowork. The move triggered investor concerns about AI potentially replacing software companies, contributing to a sharp technology market sell-off. Indian IT stocks also fell, with the Nifty IT index declining around 3%, while Infosys fell 8%, TCS 6%, HCLTech 5%, Tech Mahindra 6% and Wipro 4%.
