A new app called “Android Pulse” briefly appeared in the Google Play Store update list, raising questions among Android users about its purpose and whether it was a new standalone application.
Google has since confirmed that Android Pulse is a Google system service. Its appearance in the Play Store was accidental, and the company has pushed an update so the service now appears in the usual system services section instead.
The app is identified by the package name com.google.android.apps.pulse and is already installed on Pixel devices. It does not have a conventional app icon in the Play Store, where users initially saw only a blank square.
Google describes the service as being used for “Defining anomalies for debugging.” It facilitates the distribution of rules that help detect unusual patterns in the consumption of critical system resources by Android and installed applications.
On Pixel devices, users can find the service under Settings > Google services > All services > Privacy & security > System services. It appears there alongside other system components, including Google Play services and Android System Intelligence.
The app is also listed as “Pulse” within system settings and features a green icon inspired by a heart-rate monitor.
The appearance in the Play Store was therefore not the launch of a new consumer-facing app. Instead, Android Pulse is a built-in Google system service designed to support anomaly detection and debugging across Android devices.
