The legal industry is becoming a major focus in the enterprise AI race, with Google expanding its Gemini Enterprise platform with tools designed specifically for lawyers and law firms.
Google said Gemini Enterprise for Legal will help firms use AI for routine and complex tasks, allowing lawyers to focus on higher-value work while keeping legal data secure and confidential.
The new offering includes integrations with legal software and data platforms, along with AI agents designed to handle specialised legal and administrative tasks with limited human oversight.
Google launched Gemini Enterprise for business customers in October as it looked to attract more corporate clients. Google Cloud has since become one of Alphabet’s fastest-growing businesses. Alongside its legal offering, Google also announced new industry-focused tools for financial services and said more sector-specific products will follow.
Competition in enterprise AI is also increasing. Anthropic has expanded its business offerings, including tools for the legal sector. A 2026 Deloitte report found that law firms are investing heavily in AI as part of an early-stage transformation.
Thomson Reuters is another major competitor in the legal technology market. It recently launched Thomson 1.0, a proprietary large language model trained on its legal research content and designed for professional use. The company said the model uses open-source technology and draws on decades of its own “authoritative” legal content.
Google said Gemini Enterprise for Legal will securely connect with legal technology platforms from Thomson Reuters, as well as legal AI companies Harvey, Legora and others.
Law firms are increasingly using generative AI for legal research, drafting filings and other legal work. Many are also applying AI to client and case management to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
Amrita Mehrok, a Google Cloud product director, said the platform gives law firms flexibility to select from AI models built into the system.
Weil Gotshal, Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields and Williams & Connolly are among firms collaborating with Google on the platform. Weil Gotshal co-managing partner Jonathon Soler said clients increasingly expect lawyers to use AI and benefit from its efficiencies.
Cleary Gottlieb managing partner Jeffrey Karpf said the collaboration would allow the firm to “be involved in the creation of useful tools for law firms deploying AI.”
