Google expands Guided Learning to Search and Classroom, tightens AI controls for students

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into education, Google is introducing new measures to make AI-assisted learning more structured while giving schools greater control over how students use these tools.

The company has announced the expansion of its Guided Learning feature to Google Search and Google Classroom. It is also changing access settings for its AI products, including Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Search, for K-12 student accounts.

Guided Learning aims to make AI a learning companion

Google’s Guided Learning feature is designed to help students understand concepts rather than simply provide answers. It uses open-ended questions, interactive guidance and step-by-step explanations to help learners solve problems independently.

In Google Search, the feature will identify certain homework-related queries and guide students through the learning process. For instance, students seeking help with complex physics problems or book reports will receive prompts that encourage critical thinking instead of direct answers.

Google plans to begin testing this feature in selected schools across the US later this month. Feedback from educators will help shape its wider rollout to other school districts in the coming months.

Guided Learning now available globally in Classroom

Starting November 3, Guided Learning became globally available in Google Classroom. Teachers can assign learning activities based on classroom materials, allowing students to use the feature as a personalised study companion.

The tool will also provide teachers with real-time insights into student progress, helping them identify topics where additional support may be required. Google said it worked with schools and educators to test the feature and incorporate their feedback before its launch.

Google changes AI access for K-12 student accounts

Under its updated school controls, access to Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search will be turned off by default for K-12 student accounts. School administrators will need to explicitly enable these services.

Google said the changes follow feedback from schools, teachers, researchers and policymakers who have called for greater control over AI use in classrooms.

The company will share further details in the coming months, giving schools time to prepare before the updated controls take effect.

Google said it will continue working with educators, parents and learning experts to develop responsible AI tools that support students and improve educational outcomes.
